Once, the iron lung was used to treat polio patients. Although a vaccine completely eradicated the disease in the 1950s, some patients died before receiving the necessary medication. Children were particularly susceptible to poliomyelitis and many of those diagnosed with poliomyelitis during this period had to be treated with an iron lung.
